From a Birthday Idea to a Fundraising Marathon
Sometimes great things begin with a simple idea – and a big heart. What started as a birthday campaign by Edy Hubacher became an unprecedented fundraising marathon that touched people, opened doors over the years, and ultimately raised over 63,000 Swiss francs for Special Olympics Switzerland.
On April 15, 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, former decathlete and bobsled Olympian Edy Hubacher celebrated his 80th birthday – and decided not only to celebrate, but also to do good. His goal: 10,000 Swiss francs for the athletes of Special Olympics.
But Edy tirelessly kept at it for almost four years: over 700 emails with a 40% success rate, numerous personal conversations, and constantly new ideas to generate donations. The result was an incredible amount: 63,752 francs – six times as much as planned.
For this extraordinary commitment, Edy Hubacher was inducted into the Circle of Honor at the Regional Games in Rapperswil – as a sign of appreciation for people who are particularly committed to Special Olympics.
All donations directly supported sports and exercise programs for people with disabilities.
A heartfelt thank you to Edy – and to everyone who so generously supported this campaign.
We have recorded them in this Wall of Fame.
