The Flame of Hope
The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is a movement of police officers founded in the USA in 1981, dedicated to raising awareness for Special Olympics and athletes with intellectual disabilities, and to raising funds.
Today, up to 100,000 police officers are involved worldwide. Around National and World Games, they organize torch runs where, together with Special Olympics athletes, they carry the Flame of Hope – the symbol of courage, diversity, and community – to the opening ceremony.

LETR in Switzerland
In Switzerland, the LETR first took place in 2014 at the National Summer Games in Bern. Since then, thanks to close cooperation with the International Police Association (IPA), it has become a firm tradition. One of the most emotional moments of the Games is always when two athletes, accompanied by police officers, light the Flame of Hope.
For the police forces involved, this commitment is a matter close to their hearts. They plan and organize the torch run in their free time – and thereby give the athletes visibility, appreciation, and unforgettable experiences.
Sandro Winter, LETR Delegate of the IPA, says: “Working for these impressive athletes is a very nice balance to my daily work. The authenticity of these people is touching. We are very happy to help them gain more visibility and appreciation.”
