The Special Olympics competitions are primarily for:
- People with intellectual and/or learning disabilities, developmental disorders, and behavioral challenges.
- Children and young people aged 8 and above
However, the SOSWI competitions are open to all athletes. This means no club membership, affiliation with an institution, special education school, or other facilities is required.

Coaches accompany and support athletes at competitions. They ensure that they train regularly in the relevant sport, they know their special needs and are familiar with the sports philosophy of Special Olympics.
Unified Partner
Athletes without intellectual disabilities who participate in a competition as a team alongside athletes with intellectual disabilities.
