Handball

Handball was adopted as an official sport by Special Olympics in 2022 and is being further developed together with the Swiss Handball Federation (SHV). The team sport is played as Unified Sports® in two different modes, which are organized by the SHV.

Competition Format

  • The «Together League» takes place in tournament mode. There is no age restriction, and people in wheelchairs can also participate in the «Together League». It is possible for athletes to be accompanied by assistants, so that everyone can participate.
  • The «Unified League» takes place in championship mode. Only players who are no longer eligible for U15 play are eligible. The team should consist of a balanced number of athletes and Unified Partners.

Special Olympics Switzerland is also invited to international competitions and World Games. We forward invitations to events abroad to sports groups via the SHV. Further information can be found under International Competitions and World Games.

The cooperation agreement with the Swiss Handball Federation includes the joint promotion of inclusive handball, so that the sport is accessible to everyone.
