Athlete Crew at the Special Olympics Regional Games

Regional Games

The Regional Games are multi-day sports competitions featuring at least three sports, open to participants from all over Switzerland. They are a highlight in the annual calendar of Special Olympics Switzerland and allow athletes to compete with others. They also offer a perfect platform to gain competition experience and thus prepare for even larger events like the National Games.

Sports Offered

The focus is on competitions in at least three sports, which are conducted according to the sports philosophy of Special Olympics. Particularly important is Divisioning, which means the fair grouping of participants into categories that are as performance-homogeneous as possible.

Information for Organizers

The selection of sports is coordinated between SOSWI and the organizers. Infrastructure and demand are crucial. To ensure professional competition operations, SOSWI recommends close cooperation with local sports clubs.

Organizing Regional Games is more demanding than a single competition:

  • higher requirements for communication, event organization, volunteering, marketing, and supporting program,
  • Planning time of usually two years.
  • Exclusive Date: SOSWI reserves the date – no other Special Olympics competitions take place in the region, and nationally, no competitions in the same sports are held either.
  • Open to all: Athletes and teams from all over Switzerland can participate.
  • Regional integration: Language and communication are adapted to the venue.

SOSWI closely supports the organizing committee in all phases, from planning to implementation.
