Equestrian is the only sport at Special Olympics that is performed with an animal as a sports partner. The interaction between rider and horse is technically demanding and requires a great deal of sensitivity. To participate in competitions, all riders must have completed at least 10 riding lessons within six months prior to the tournament with an Equestrian coach or a recognized riding instructor. At Special Olympics, riders and horses do not know each other at competitions, which gives the sport an extremely exciting dynamic and demands a great deal of sensitivity from both sides.
Competition Format
- Competitions are held in Switzerland in English and Western riding styles.
- At Special Olympics, riders and horses do not know each other at competitions, which gives the competition an exciting dynamic and demands a lot of finesse from both sides.

Special Olympics Switzerland is also invited to international competitions and World Games. We forward invitations to international events to athletes and sports groups who are active with us. Further information can be found under International Competitions and World Games.
