Two players Curling on ice
Curling

Curling is a popular winter sport in Switzerland and has been officially part of the Special Olympics Switzerland program since 2020. The team sport is currently only played as Unified Sports® in Switzerland. Curling requires concentration, tactics, and a certain amount of agility. Assistive devices make it possible to adapt the training or competition to the abilities of the players.

Fairness is very important in Curling, there are no referees and the players solve critical situations among themselves.

Competition Format

  • It is played according to the Unified Sports principle in teams of four players (three athletes and one Unified Partner).
  • Curling is played in tournament form, with several games being played in one day. A game comprises three ends and lasts a maximum of 45 minutes.
  • Curling is planned to be offered as a demonstration sport at the World Winter Games 2029. This means that international Curling competitions will be held by Special Olympics for the first time.

Through a cooperation with Swiss Curling, the development of Curling in Switzerland for people with intellectual disabilities is specifically supported by the association.
